Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has discussed how reading assisted his mental health during a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill credited reading for aiding his recovery during a recent period out of action with a toe injury. The England international, who missed 10 weeks of the 2023-24 season, turned to books to maintain a positive mindset while unable to play, according to Chelsea FC. He stated that the habit helped him escape the frustrations of the treatment room.

Colwill is now working with the National Literacy Trust to encourage children to develop a love for reading. The centre-back visited a primary school in London to share his experiences and highlight the importance of literacy. He noted that many young people view reading as a chore rather than a hobby, per Sky Sports.

Chelsea currently sit 11th in the Premier League table following a recent 2-2 draw with Brentford. Colwill has made 23 league appearances this term, according to the Premier League. The 21-year-old remains a key part of the first-team squad under head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
