Flamengo sacked head coach Filipe Luis on Tuesday, according to Reuters. The decision followed the club's 8-0 victory over Madureira, which confirmed its place in the Campeonato Carioca final. The former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid defender leaves the role after five months in charge. Under his leadership, the team won the 2024 Copa do Brasil title in November.
Club officials notified Luis of the decision shortly after the match at the Maracana Stadium. Flamengo stated that the coaching change aimed to address recent inconsistencies in performance before the upcoming final, per ESPN. The board reportedly sought a different direction for the squad despite the significant scoreline in the semi-final second leg.
Luis, who retired from playing in 2023, initially managed the Flamengo under-17 and under-20 sides before taking the senior job. The club has not yet named a permanent successor for the final. Assistant coaches will manage first-team training sessions until a new appointment occurs later this week.
