Sam Kerr scored her first international goal in 28 months as Australia defeated the Philippines 1-0 in their Asian Cup group stage match.

Australia Women began their Asian Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory against the Philippines at HBF Park in Perth. Sam Kerr scored the only goal of the match in the second half, marking her first strike for the national team since October 2023. The Chelsea striker converted a cross from Steph Catley to secure the three points for the Matildas, according to Football Australia.

The Philippines maintained a disciplined defensive structure throughout the first half, limiting Australia to few clear opportunities. Goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel made several saves to keep the match level until the 61st minute. Tony Gustavsson's side eventually broke the deadlock when Kerr found space in the penalty area to finish from close range, per reports from The Guardian.

Australia now sits at the top of Group B following the result. The Matildas are scheduled to face Thailand in their second group fixture on Wednesday. The tournament serves as a qualification route for the 2027 World Cup, according to the Asian Football Confederation.
