England players expressed concern regarding their roles at the upcoming World Cup, according to Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Maheta Molango. The PFA head stated that the national squad members do not wish to be used as political spokespeople during the tournament. Molango told the Guardian that players feel unfairly burdened by expectations to comment on non-sporting issues.
The PFA chief noted that footballers often face pressure to lead on social and political causes that are outside their professional remit. Per Sky Sports, Molango argued that the responsibility for addressing human rights or political concerns should lie with governing bodies and organisers rather than the athletes themselves.
England's squad has previously engaged in various social campaigns, but Molango indicated a desire to protect them from excessive external demands. The union leader emphasised that players want to focus on their performance on the pitch. These comments come as preparations continue for the global competition, with the PFA seeking clearer boundaries for international representatives.
