Walsall sack head coach Sadler after Salford defeat

Football

Walsall have dismissed head coach Mat Sadler following a 1-0 loss to Salford City that left the club 11th in the League Two table.

Walsall confirmed the departure of Sadler on Wednesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the defeat at the Peninsula Stadium. Fabio Borini scored the only goal of the game in the 74th minute, condemning the Saddlers to their fourth defeat in five matches. Sadler leave the Bescot Stadium with the team 11th in the division, according to Wikipedia records.

The dismissal follows a significant decline in form for the club. Walsall sat four points clear at the summit of League Two in early December but have managed just one victory in their last 11 fixtures, per the Express & Star. Sadler previously signed a new three-and-a-half year contract in January 2025 while the club was top of the league.

Club officials have not yet announced a successor for the 41-year-old former defender. Sadler originally took charge as interim manager in April 2023 before receiving the permanent role in May 2023. Walsall next face Cambridge United on Tuesday, per the official club website.
