The Women's Super League (WSL) states that the proposed January 2028 dates for the inaugural FIFA Women's Club World Cup could be “catastrophic” for the domestic calendar. FIFA has confirmed the tournament will run from 5 to 30 January 2028.
A WSL spokesperson confirmed the league is firmly against these dates and has made its case to FIFA. The schedule would impact five WSL match rounds. The league suggests holding the competition during the northern hemisphere's summer months instead.
Clubs and players are also believed to oppose the current schedule, according to the WSL. However, the league is not calling for a boycott or threatening to withdraw English teams. The Football Supporters' Association (FSA) and 34 supporter groups previously raised “serious concerns” in November 2025 regarding player welfare and potential distortion of the domestic game.
The new competition is expected to feature 16 teams, with at least five from Europe. Qatar is reportedly in discussions to host the event.
